The Daily Mirror: [Friday 12th January 2007]
The 12th Jan 07 issue of the Daily Mirror tabloid is at first glance sectioned into two seperated halves of a page.the top half contains infomation on a free gift which features with the magazine, however the consumer has to collect this from the supermarket Sommerfield. The gift being offered is a "free DVD" on dolphins. By doing this the Daily Mirror advertising Sommerfield. The san serif font implies that thismaybe unimportant and irrelevent. Also the advert may well have a catch to it and the offer is not "free" like it states. This reflects on the type of the newspaper, Daily Mirror being a tabloid, tabloid do not contain relevent infomation, instead most of thier articles are focused on celebrities and gossip. The fact that the newspaper is offering a free poster and stickers, may suggest that they are aiming to a younger, working class and slightly uneducatd audience and also immature.
The article below this is about David Beckham and his offer from a big football club in the U.S. This is named "Po$h and Buck$" in bold clean sarif, huge, bold writting. The 'S' in the splash is replaced with doller signs instead reinforncing the amount of money David Beckham will be earning by the time he has signed the contract. Also as the team is an American team, and dollers is American, this a play on the way the editors have decided upon this. Also instead of writting "Posh and Becks" they decided to write "Posh and Bucks" implying that he is the breadwinna in this family and is bringing in al the money. Likewise the word or phrase "bucks" is written coloured in like the American flag, which suggests unitism.
The story is labelled "EXCULSIVE" in red sarif font, suggesting that the Daily Mirror is the first and exclusive indeviduals to have thier hands on this story. The sarif font suggests a 'no-frills' look and the editor maybe implying that whatever is in this newspaper or article is completely true. However as media literates and constant readers, we can argue that their newspaper contradicts this. Also as readers we tend to read the newspaper for entertainment and gossip. So therefore they are aiming to a particular type of audience.
Towards the bottom left of the newspaper, we see a large close up of the celebrity David Beckham. Grimley he is smilling, we can see that he is chuffed with his offer and no doubt will be moving to the U.S to take it on. We can slightly see that David Becham is wearing a white shirt, suggestin purity and goodness. The fact that he is in level with us, shows that he is not indominating us and neither are we inferior to him. His eyes seeem to be looking stright toward to camera which suggests that he is looking at the reader. This shows the confidence in the picture and also this appeals to those who admire him.
Finally, the black background of this splash suggests a hidden agenda. Black is a dark colour connoting secrecy and covering up.
